The source code of all the pages contains a document type declaration (doctype) which conforms to the syntax defined by the W3C.
Allow for correct interpretation of the pages by providing the user agents with the standard in use.
Use one of the document type declarations provided in the List of valid DTDs you can use in your document published by the W3C QA
Check that the doctype used in the one that returns the fewest errors (or ideally none) when submitted to a validator
